Exclusively Obsidian: Day 3

Exclusively Obsidian: Day 3

Now that I'm on my third day of just using Obsidian I feel like I'm finally getting into a groove.

I changed my theme yet again after I saw the Ulysses blog. If you haven't seen it you really need to check it out. It's a custom Ghost blog and it's absolutely gorgeous.

So I got the same font they used, interstate from Adobe TypeKit, and also made my internal and external links look like theirs. Now I absolutely love the way my Obsidian vault looks. I'm still putting some finishing touches on text here and there, but I'm very happy with the way it looks.

But I'm running into a few things that still frustrate me:

  • Editor/Preview mode
  • Backlinks - the way they look
  • Blank spaces

Let me dive into these real quick.

Editor/Preview Mode

I won't spend too much time on this since I've mentioned it before and WYSIWYG is currently being worked on, but man, I really can't stand having to switch between the two.

If I could just work like in Bear and Typora, which is coming, then it would make the experience 10 times better. It's such an annoying thing to be looking at the beautiful Preview mode and want to start typing, but I can't, so I have to switch back to Editor mode where the spacing of the bullets and toggle triangle are often off.

The backlinks work just fine, that's not really my problem. I just hate that they are buried in the small sidebar. I would much prefer them at the bottom of the page where they can be much larger and show more detail possibly.

There's not a lot of space for the backlinks.

Bottom of the page gives you much more space to spread out and see your links.

The Roam backlinks at the bottom of the page are much wider and it's easier to read all the detail. I would love for the option to view them at the bottom of the page. I hate reading them on the sidebar, especially in mobile. It's just way too small.

Blank Spaces

I like to insert some space between sections of thoughts. In Roam I would just press enter a few times and have a few bullets, it's not the best, but it's ok. In Obsidian I was hoping to have the ability to easily press enter a few times and create some blank spaces. I don't want a lot, but maybe 2-4 times pressing enter to create some space. Nope. Not in Obsidian.

Obsidian follows strict Markdown rules which doesn't allow for blank spaces. It's super frustrating. Here's an example. The first picture is Editor mode where I can add some spaces, the second pictures is what it looks like in Preview mode.

Adding space in Editor mode.

All the space goes away in Preview mode.

This isn't the end of the world, but it's super annoying.

I can live with it, but it's just one of those things where I'm like, "....Why?" Again, I'm sure there's a reason, but this is the only note-taking app that does this (to my knowledge). Again, a small thing, but it adds up.

Day 3 Conclusion

I am liking Obsidian, but I need to get around all these small things that annoy me. I'm thinking a lot of them will be fixed in time. I may go ahead and lock in the $50/year for Sync because their sync is great.

So far, it's working out well. I think I could switch permanently. I definitely am considering it. But I have a few more days of using it exclusively.
